Pool Safety

The temperatures are warming across America and that means swimming pools will be crowded everywhere. During the spring and summer months, millions of children will be swimming in their backyards or in a friend’s pool, and unfortunately this is the time of year when child deaths by drowning are very high.

Year after year, we are reminded by the news and local officials to watch our children anytime they are even near a pool yet we still see every season a news report about local children drowning. Young kids are so eager to go swimming and splash in the water but they are not yet able to understand how dangerous a pool really is.

To keep your child and pool area safe this year, we found some extra precaution tools to make pool safety better and prevent accidents. These tools are to be used in addition to a very vigilant, responsible adult to keep a close eye and be proactive in the event of a catastrophe. These are simply extra measures to keep kids safe before the last second.

Children drown for many reasons, but one of them is that they walk through the back door that was left open while Mom is stirring the pasta and next thing you know, her two year old has fallen or jumped into the pool but can’t swim. Sometimes they open the door themselves and sneak out, so an excellent device to alert you before a disaster happens is essential. Try installing pool door alarms on all your doors that lead to the pool area. Our sliding doors and all doors into the backyard are armed with these alarms so they will sound as soon as it is opened by a child. For adults we just hit the button, way up at the top of the door then walk outside to silence the alarm when we walk through. Alarms for gates and fencing can also be installed outdoors.

Once you get outside for a BBQ or pool party, we still need protection outside so parents can keep an eye on every child even when the pool and deck is packed. BrickHouse, the maker of GPS child locator systems, makes a unique pool alarm to sound when a child jumps or falls into the pool. For any child that isn’t supposed to be in the pool unless with an adult, they can wear a wristband alarm on their wrist that will sound when submerged and the wristband is only removable with a key for Mom to unlock once inside. The band also works on pets! Additional wrist bands can also be purchased.

If you have stairs leading to the deck area or a place where a pool gate can be installed to block children from entering unsupervised, an alarmed pool gate is another life saving investment. Just like we put an alarm on our doors, we can alarm our gates that surround the pool and deck areas so parents will be alerted by alarm should a child try to get to the pool alone.

These measures will all help greatly to keep our focus on pool safety and help keep kids alive but we need to remember in the pool, it is our responsibility to keep their heads above water. A life jacket is the only approved device to save a child’s life and properly keep them afloat. Life vests are sold at Target stores, sports stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods, pool stores, online at Amazon or Ebay, and other stores online. Be sure to only buy federally approved life vests recognized by the safety administration and the United States Coast Guard.

Even with all these gadgets, the number one tool in preventing pool injury and death is your supervision at all times at home, by the pool, in the tub, or at the lake or beach. It is the responsibility of watchful eyes to ensure kids do not drown or become hurt by the water.

A Better Kind of Splurge

For the average family money is usually an issue. Money is often tight or at least the accounts must be well managed in order to keep from spending more than the income coming in; but when we do look to splurge there are a few thing moms look to buy: vacation, theme park trips, or a Coach purse.

Family time is always a fantastic investment but before you go buy yourself something nice like new shoes or that to-die-for handbag, consider for just this time, splurging on something you might not consider or even know exists that is not only a cool thing to have, it also can save your child.

Child locator systems could be one of the greatest things ever invented, second to GPS, the technology behind it all.

Remember the Duracell battery commercials a couple years ago that had a serious tone to them? The mother is in the park with her son having a picnic, turns to answer the phone, turns back and he’s gone. She screams for him then pulls out her little tracker from her purse that leads her straight to her son who came back with a balloon and an ice cream cone. That commercial mentioned the Brickhouse Child Locator.

Brickhouse Security is one of the best websites I have ever browsed. Their premier product, Exclusive 2.0 Tamper-Alert, Live On Demand Tracking Technology child locator sells for $300, but is $100 off for the next month during National Safety Month. This device looks like a watch on your child but cannot be removed. Your child cannot just take it off on his/her own without tools and some strength, but if the device is being tampered with, an alert is sent to your cell phone and email right away, hence the name “Tamper-Alert”. You can also use your online account or cell phone to get updates anytime where your child is by sending a quick message in seconds. The Live On Demand Tracking Technology means just that, track your kids in real time, right when you want to know.

A smaller, cheaper device, sells for $60 normally, but is on sale through April for $20 off. The “Mommy, I’m Here!” child locator clips onto clothing, shoes, in a pocket, backpack, or wherever on your child. Mom has a device to hit the button anytime and a loud beeping will alert you to the direction your child is in until you find him/her. On the child the device looks like a cute little teddy bear instead of a tracking device to be more concealed and go unnoticed to a stranger. In a crowd, the beeping is designed for others to hear and look towards the sound, further putting your child in view of others nearby should a kidnapper be close enough to try and snatch your son or daughter. The device comes in many colors like pink, brown, and green and is ready to use as soon as it arrives to your door. This is a simple to use device for the malls, grocery stores, and the park.

Not only do we have children in our lives that we love so dearly, but also elderly or disabled loved ones that need care and help. When they’re living alone or in an assisted living center, it’s nerve-racking for the family to not know how their mother or grandmother is doing while we are at work or out of town. BrickHouse Security also has safety detection devices to alert for falls. BrickHouse Alert Home with Fall Detection has a sensor that indicates when a person has fallen and will immediately send for help. It wears easily on pants or hooked to a belt to be worn at all times. There is also a panic button that can be pushed in the event your loved one needs an ambulance or police right away.

The BrickHouse website has a product variety of stun guns, nanny cams and hidden camera systems, spy gear, home security, and even pool alarms to alert loudly if a child or pet has fallen into the water. With the warm months here and pool season, protect your pets and children now to avoid being that grieving family on the news this summer.

Now isn’t that far better and more gratifying than a Coach purse? It’s better to buy a locator and never need it, than never buy it and need it. Vistit www.brickhousesecurity.com to see all the amazing protective products they carry.

FREE OLD MOVIES

http://emol.org/movies/catalog/index.html This website offers free public domain movies to your computer or can be downloaded to a media device. Since most of these movies are public domain, the rights to use them are free. The films are from the 1930’s to 1960’s but are fantastic for a family movie night and guaranteed a good time for your kids (maybe not teenagers, unless they are feeling retro cool!). As a parent I love these old movies cause I know that they won’t have too much violence, swearing or morally questionable acts, which makes me feel great. Also, I’m a bit of a nostalgic sap and I loved these movies as kids and I still love them.

They have cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Betty Boop, Shirley Temple and other classic greats.

FREE INTERNET PHONE CALLS

While I figure most people know about using Skype, which is an internet phone that gives you free computer to computer calls, you may not know that there are a host of other free services out there that offer PC/Mac to phone telephone calls. This is incredible. I remember the days when an international call cost hundreds of dollars, especially if it was eeh hem, the late 1980’s and you were calling a boyfriend oversees. But, I just Skyped with my friend in Spain for over an hour and it cost me….nada! Zilch! Zero dollars, this is rather incredible in my book.

GOOGLE VOICE is a Google sponsored service that provides telephone services on a host of different phone platforms, like your computer, home phone, iphone, cell phone etc. and by using one google number you can have any phone or device you chose answer the call…FOR FREE…very very cool.

iCall.com is another free internet phone service that allows you to call from your computer to any phone using free downloadable software. Again, these are very cool features, especially if you are calling loved ones that are far away.

And last but not least.

Oovoo.com which is a competitor to Skype that allows you to make internet calls all over the world for free. Oovoo also allows you to have up to six participants in one call. Again this is technology that only a few years ago cost thousands of dollars and needed to be held in special audio/visual arenas and now you can video call a multitude of friends, family and co-workers for free from the comfort of your own home. WOW.

Battle of the Vegetables

Most moms have this struggle at some point in their child’s life. Kids sometimes love their veggies and other times they spit them out as far Fiji, and if they’re like my son, they loved them, now they don’t.

Kids are peculiar creatures. To deal with them we have come up with some crazy plans like “open up for the airplane”. Well if that routine is in your house or you’re thinking about it, you HAVE TO see this! Yep, that’s an airplane spoon and bib set with a flashing lights runway!

If the battle is not going well for the parents’ side, it might be time to call in the next battalion, the professionals. Many doctors and nutritionists write books to help guide parents through this stage and get the right nutrition into their children’s bellies, so if that’s you, books like this one may help. Feeding the Picky Eater is written by a married husband and nurse duo with their advice to help moms get creative so their kids will actually want to eat their greens, or at least take them without a fuss.

The trick to getting kids to eat their recommended daily allotment of vegetables is to feed them in a way kids accept them, and not know they’re there. Take the idea of Jamba Juice and V8 Fusion drinks as a good sample, they blend fruits and vegetables together to make a delicious cocktail that people enjoy; that’s the key. You can try some recipes that combine things like kale, spinach, strawberries, and blueberries in one drink, or even grapefruit, to get kids a healthy smoothie for breakfast or a snack, and also make them a healthy salad that disguises the food!

For a healthy shake, try this combination:

1 small handful of spinach

A little Kale

1 cup of strawberries

1/2 cup of yogurt

1/3 banana or 1/2 small banana

1 pinch of brown sugar

Blend into a juice or smoothie texture, serve.

Now remember that kids sometimes will not accept a new food the first few times, in fact, experience shows that some kids could take 10-12 solid attempts before they appreciate them. Vegetables are an acquired taste, and kids need help and time to acquire themselves.

Also remember that blending fruits like blueberries and blackberries with just water makes a thin juice that you can soak or cook foods in for a natural, healthy food dye to further disguise the presence of broccoli and cauliflower. Creative thinking is the master tool to healthier diets.

Salad dressings like vinaigrettes are made with raspberries and olive oil with added herbs for rich flavor that makes eating salads taste much better while also providing more nutrition; and homemade recipes have more locked in nutrients because they are made fresh and not processed. Raspberry vinaigrette also has a pink tint to disguise the foods a little. Kids love colors and sweet flavor so use them.

In our home, I make soup from pureed sweet potatoes, a little olive oil, and boiled potatoes that are nice and soft, sometimes mixed with tomato soup. Soups, drinks, and mashed (like potatoes) help interest kids in food, and a little zest of spices, pepper, or a pinch of brown sugar can train kids to enjoy those healthy foods. Try them with pasta also. Cut up veggies, steam soft, them add in with a nice sauce or homemade dressing for taste. Toddlers may even want to get involved and help make the meal, that might excite them to try their creation.

Have your little ones try this Sweet Vegetable Smoothie, made with cinnamon and nutmeg! Click to get the recipe, then scroll down the page and look at all the delicious smoothie ideas to incorporate fresh vegetables and nutrition into your children’s diets. This website makes it very easy to inspire new ideas for moms to incorporate the right nutrition with great taste, and fun making the food by yourself or with your kids, they might even inspire ideas for dinners and lunches as well, like sandwich spreads and sauces.

Inspire The Kids, Enhance Learning, Enjoy New Adventures

Part of bettering a child’s education is improving their focus and desire to learn, and that all can come free of charge straight from the parents. The biggest success tool our children have is their mother, father, siblings, grandparents, and guardians there to help them anytime they need help and to be an active role each day in the child’s education. This means missing our favorite show or hitting the “record” button on the DVR to spend time right next to them as they study their math work and reading.

Even if they seem to know it all and do well on their report cards, it’s important to be there as a continuous force in their learning to inspire them to keep going. One of the easiest things parents can do is grab a book, even a short one, or a chapter to read with the kids.

We have forgotten about those fun trips to the local library and reading a bedtime story, but books are actually so much better than today’s television shows as they inspire better grammar, learning, and they are far more appropriate than what’s on the TV. Books spark imagination and creativity as kids are taken on wonderous journeys through reading enchanting tales.

Amazing authors are all over the world and here are a few terrific books for all ages you should look into buying and reading with the kids or get for the older ones to read to themselves. These books might also be great to keep the kids using their brains as summer vacation comes around the corner.

Fur Face by Jon Gibbs is available on the Kindle now from Amazon for only $2.99 and if you have a smartphone, the Kindle app is free! This book is written for the Young Adult genre such as teens and pre-teens, download your copy here! While you’re there, take a look through the suggested reads as well and buy a couple of those; your children, or you, won’t be disappointed, most ages will love them. By the way, they are way better than Twilight.

Or how about Jake and Jesus by Kelly Hagen for younger kids in preschool and Kindergarten? You may also want to introduce your kids to the classics you loved growing up, like Harold and the Purple Crayon.

The Going To Bed Book is the perfect book for obvious times of day and for little ones, this is a fabulously fun book, Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes

Middle school and high school girls will love And Both Were Young by Madeline L’Engle about a young girl in a Swiss boarding school who meets Paul and her neatly scheduled life gets put in the shredder to become chaos and a dangerous love. What is Paul hiding though? Find out.

If the name Madeline L’Engle sounds familiar, that’s because it should, she’s written dozens of novels like her famous A Ring of Endless Light. That’s the one with the dolphins in the cove and the young girl dealing with a love square as her family takes care of their dying grandpa in a small island town.

Moms, don’t think we forgot about you either. We know you’re tired, need a shower, and an escape portal so for you, we found some tremendous books to read page by page or chapter by chapter, depending how much time you have, when you get a break or after the kids fall asleep.

A few years back I read a series by Carly Phillips that you might want to entice yourself with before bed, and let your husband read a couple lines from. Wink Wink. The Bachelor, The Playboy, and The Heartbreaker are a three part series about three brothers notorious for avoiding marriage and children, and their mother just wants grandbabies before she dies, will she get them? And what type of sexy adventures are on each page? Give The Bachelor a read and you’ll want to read the whole series!

Writers have put their pen and soul into millions of great reads all over bookstores, Amazon, and ereaders like Kindle so take a browse together and find something wonderful to read for every family member, anytime.

Keeping Kids in Their Place–Literally!!

*Not Me

*The pictures in this post are not of the author or her home, merely to demonstrate.

I don’t know about your house, but mine gets insane sometimes. Since I am the only one home during the day with my almost three year old, my stuff is hard to protect.

My son will dart to my room as soon as I turn to answer the phone, then I run after him with the phone and everything that was on my dresser is on the floor, and of course closing doors doesn’t work because he’s been able to open them for some time.

He loves to get into anything that isn’t his. That’s when I realized, he not only needs his playroom he has, but he needs something of his own he can crawl all over and make a mess with.

Part of what drives moms so crazy is their three year olds diving into anything and everything, no matter how many millions of times they have been yelled at and punished for, they want desperately to explore and entice their little noggins. Once kids learn to walk, the chase is on and it’s a long one.

When kids are well occupied and having fun with one particular item or game, they behave better and can remain in one area long enough for you to stir the pot without them making a break for the china cabinet or the back door. Finally I used my head and came up with a few ideas that may help mothers-to-be or any other mom: Playhuts!

Playhut is a genius company that has designed hundreds of cool indoor play tents for kids to play with and keep busy instead of getting into your bedroom and closet. Amazon has a huge selection of these tents like Thomas the Tank Engine, a school bus, school house, cafe, teepee, race car, and so many more!

I also found another website that sells fun indoor play tents for toddlers and Preschool-aged children to play in. These tents can be bought for less than $20 in many designs or a little higher in price for bigger budgets. To make one on the super-cheap, or free, try this link and the recommended book; but the book isn’t free.

Ebay is another excellent resource for new and used tents to buy online and get in the mail soon. In the search field at ebay.com, type in “Playhut” and over a thousand results will immediately pop up and you can narrow down results by condition, location, and price, or Buy It Now instead of making an auction bid. Playhut is the name brand and one of the best I have found; this search will bring up other brands and similar items as well.

If you’d like to get one free or very cheap, try browsing craigslist.org and searching “free” on the for sale section or try posting your own “wanted” ad.

Keeping them in their bedrooms or playrooms with the door shut does work too, though someone must be in there at all times to keep an eye and not keep them in too long because they get stir crazy like caged animals! Gates can also be put across the doorway but keep a watchful eye still because kids will learn to climb them, and then they can get hurt or be on the run again.

For outdoor fun in a safe, confined area, outdoor playsets are plenty fun. The price can climb very high, but some are inexpensive and easy to bring indoors like the garage to prevent sun damage and rotting from the weather. For these also, I prefer Amazon because of the excellent pricing and variety for the smaller sets like the plastic ones or the permanent outdoor swingsets.

Here are just some I found that most moms and their kids will love. I typed “outdoor playsets” in the Amazon search and this list should give you an excellent starting point for all budgets.

And I found these at Walmart.com. The prices of outdoor swingsets and playgrounds from Walmart can range from $500 to less than $90 or cheaper for just a single swing sold separately.

For indoor time, try this neat swing, that holds a child weighing up to 70 pounds!
